Every boat we manage has at least three bilge pumps. Not because we’re paranoid. Because pumps fail.
The 3-pump rule
Pump 1 — Primary automatic. Float switch, dedicated circuit, automatic operation. This is the workhorse. It should be sized for the boat: 1,500–2,000 GPH for most 30’–45′ hulls, larger for bigger boats. Wired to the house battery with a fuse, not the engine battery.
Pump 2 — Secondary automatic. Higher water-line activation than Pump 1. If Pump 1 fails or is overwhelmed, Pump 2 kicks in. Should be sized at least as large as Pump 1. Independent circuit. Independent fuse.
Pump 3 — Manual / high-capacity. Either a manually-operated diaphragm pump (best for sailboats and small powerboats) or a 3,000+ GPH high-capacity electric pump on a manual switch only. This is the “abandon plans, fix the leak” pump. It should drain the bilge faster than any realistic leak can fill it.
What people get wrong
- All three pumps on the same circuit. A single fuse blow kills all three. Wrong.
- All three pumps with float switches at the same height. Pump 1 and Pump 2 should activate at different water levels so Pump 2 is a true backup, not a parallel.
- Sharing batteries with starting. Bilge pumps draw significant current. They should be on a dedicated house battery or the inverter battery, not the start battery.
- Skipping the manual pump. Electronics fail. Batteries die. A manual pump on a sailboat with no power is the difference between an inconvenience and an emergency.
What we check on every visit
Bilge pump checks are part of the standard visual inspection at every service tier. Pump test, float switch test, circuit test, hose condition. Five minutes per pump. Caught before it matters.
Boats sink because something predictable failed and nobody was looking. The 3-pump rule is non-negotiable.
